Malin Kundang

Once upon a time, in a small village near the sea, there lived a poor widow and her only son named Malin Kundang. Malin was a smart and hardworking boy. He often helped his mother to earn a living.

One day, Malin saw a merchant ship docking at the shore. He was fascinated by the life of the sailors and dreamed of going overseas to seek fortune. With his mother’s reluctant blessing, Malin decided to join the ship and promised to come back for her one day.

Years passed, and Malin worked very hard. He sailed to many places and traded goods. Slowly, he became rich and successful. He married a beautiful woman who came from a noble family. Malin’s life changed completely.

One day, Malin’s ship anchored near his hometown. The villagers recognized him and spread the news. His poor old mother, who had waited for years, hurried to the shore with tears of joy. She was so happy to finally meet her beloved son.

However, when Malin saw his mother, he felt ashamed of her ragged clothes and old appearance. He did not want his noble wife and crew to know that the poor woman was his mother. In front of everyone, Malin denied her.

“Go away, old woman! I don’t know you!” shouted Malin.

The mother’s heart was broken. With deep sadness and pain, she raised her hands to the sky and prayed to God:

“Oh God, if he is truly my son, punish him for his cruelty!”

Suddenly, the sky grew dark, the wind blew hard, and lightning struck. Malin’s magnificent ship was destroyed by the storm. As he tried to save himself, Malin fell on the shore. At that very moment, his body slowly turned into stone.

From then on, people believed that the large rock on the beach was Malin Kundang, the ungrateful son who disobeyed his mother.
